Cardinal Softball Sweeps Wayne State

DETROIT, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team swept Wayne State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Cardinals (18-11, 5-1 GLIAC) won game one 8-1 before closing out the afternoon with a 5-3 night cap.

GAME ONE – SVSU 8 – WAYNE STATE 1

Emily Depew (W, 9-4) got the start for SVSU in game one where she went 6.0 innings, striking out eight Warriors and allowing just five hits and one earned run. Aalana Kimble completed the game with one inning in the circle.

Alyssa Muench put the Cardinals on the board with a single to center field that scored Ella Reifschneider in the top of the third inning.

Sara Moos scored in the fourth inning to double the lead for SVSU. Katelyn Pnacek doubled to center field to bring Maddie Campagna home for another run in the inning.

Paige Kolinski hit her fifth home run of the season that tallied two more runs to bring the score to 5-0 in the fifth inning.

Three runs came across the plate on a single by Moos to push the lead to 8-0 in the top of the sixth inning. Wayne State put its first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth to prevent the shutout.

Muench finished game one going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Moos and Campagna were 2-for-4 with Moos scoring a run and an RBI. Campagna also scored a run. Kolinski finished with two RBI to lead SVSU in that category.

GAME TWO – SVSU 5 – WAYNE STATE 3

Muench hit a sacrifice fly to bring Kimble home for a 1-0 lead in the opening frame of game two.

Muench (W, 5-5) started game two and earned her fifth win of the season after going 4.2 innings, sitting down three WSU hitters. Kimble earned her second save with 2.1 innings pitched in game two.

Wayne State knotted things up with a run in the bottom half of the second inning.

Muench helped her own cause with a home run to left field to score Mya Purdy and Reifschneider to build a 4-1 lead in the third inning.

A run by the Warriors cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Sabin put the final run on the board for the Cardinals with a single to center field that scored Natalie Savage.

A third run by Wayne State in the bottom half of the fifth inning to put the score where it would rest for the remainder of the game.

Purdy was a perfect 4-for-4 in game two while scoring one run. Sabin recorded two hits in her four at-bats while bringing a runner home.

The SVSU softball team makes a second road trip for the weekend with a doubleheader at Grand Valley State tomorrow (Sunday) April 7 beginning at 1:00 PM EST.
