Cardinals drop pair of games to No. 24 Lakers

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University softball team faced the 24th-ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

The host Lakers took both games of the doubleheader, winning the first one by a score of 2-1, and taking the second game 5-0 over the Cardinals. SVSU is now 18-12 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC.

Game One Breakdown:

  • The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when Jackie Popko came across to score for the Cardinals after a Laker error that allowed Sara Moos to reach base. 
  • GVSU took the victory with a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • Maddie Campanga led the Cardinals at the plate with two hits, while Popko, Moos, and Sarah Gersch each had one.
  • Emily Depew (6-7) took the loss on the mound after pitching 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, and striking out nine.

Game Two Breakdown:

  • SVSU's offense struggled in the second game of the doubleheader, as they only managed two hits, with one coming from Blasia Moyler and the other from Jessica Kreuzer.
  • The Lakers got their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning before adding another in the third.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, GVSU scored three runs on their way to the victory. 
  • On the mound for the Cardinals, Julia Mundy went 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, and posting four strikeouts.
