Cardinals sweep Rangers for first GLIAC wins of 2022

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team traveled to the Parkway Bank Sports Complex to take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a GLIAC doubleheader on Monday in Rosemont, Ill.

The Cardinals used a combined shutout from Jaclyn Groves and Emily Depew to take game one 3-0. SVSU swept the doubleheader, rolling to a 10-0 win in the finale. The sweep moves the Cardinals to 16-10 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC.

Game One Breakdown:

  • The Cardinals took the lead in the first inning on RBIs from Jackie Popko and Sara Moos after the inning started with a Ranger error.
  • The score remained the same until Moos added her second RBI of the game in the sixth to make it 3-0.
  • The scoring was more than enough for the SVSU pitching in game one. Jaclyn Groves (5-1) got the start and pitched four innings, allowing just one hit, walking three, and striking out five.
  • Emily Depew (1) earned a three-inning save, allowing one hit, walking two, and striking out three.
  • Popko finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.

Game Two Breakdown:

  • The Cardinals jumped out in front early with an RBI double from Meagan VerVaecke in the second followed by a two-run single from Paige Kolinski.
  • After Moos and Kolinski added RBIs in the third to make it 5-0, the Cardinals scored four in the fourth, including a two-run double from VerVaecke.
  • Julia Salisbury added an RBI in the fifth to push the lead to 10-0.
  • The Rangers got on the board for the first time in the doubleheader with a single run in the fifth, but the game ended as Parkside was unable to get closer.
  • Julia Mundy (4-1) pitched all five innings, allowing one run on five hits, walking three, and striking out five.
  • VerVaecke and Kolinski each finished with two hits and three RBIs.
  • Salisbury added two hits and two RBIs, while Popko finished with two hits and three runs scored.
