VerVaecke slam, strong pitching lead SVSU to sweep

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Saginaw Valley State University softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Findlay University on the road Sunday.

The Cardinals won game one 6-2 in eight innings, before rolling to a 10-1 five-inning victory in game two. SVSU is now 13-7 overall. 

Game One Breakdown:

  • Findlay opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. 
  • In the top of the fourth, SVSU got on the board when Julia Salisbury singled home Cam Coonan and tied the score at 1-1. 
  • The Oilers answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 2-1.
  • Sarah Gersch tied the game for SVSU in the top of the sixth when she singled home Coonan.
  • Both teams were unable to find the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings.
  • With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth, Meagan VerVaecke put the Cardinals ahead for good with a grand slam, bringing home Coonan, Gersch, and Blasia Moyler
  • Emily Depew was outstanding on the mound for SVSU, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing two runs, four hits, and recording 13 strikeouts in the win, bringing her record to 5-4. 

Game Two Breakdown:

  • SVSU got the scoring started right away in the top of the first, with Coonan bringing home Leah Denome with an RBI single and Sarah Gersch hitting a sacrifice fly and scoring Sara Moos
  • A two-run single by Moos in the top of the second scored Jackie Popko and Maddie Campagna, making it 4-0 Cardinals. 
  • Paige Kolinski brought home Julia Salisbury with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, before a three-run home run by Campagna scored VerVaecke and Gersch and made it 8-0. 
  • A solo home run by Alexis Gills made it 9-0 in the top of the fourth, before an error by the Oilers allowed Cam Coonan to score and make it 10-0.
  • Findlay got one run in the bottom of the fifth, but it was all they could get and SVSU cruised to victory.
  • Alyssa Muench got the start and went 5.0 innings, allowing one run, five hits, and striking out four. The sophomore is now 2-1 this season.

SVSU will remain on the road and face Cedarville University in a doubleheader at 1 pm Monday afternoon in Cedarville, Ohio.
