Cardinals close undefeated weekend with win over Chargers

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team completed a perfect opening weekend with a win over Hillsdale College Sunday at The Dome in Rosemont, Ill.

The Cardinals topped the Chargers 4-1 to improve to an undefeated 5-0 to start the season, the first for Head Coach Christie Ambrosi.

After a scoreless first four innings, the Cardinals broke through with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Sarah Gersch to drive in Leah Denome. Sara Moos doubled the lead with an RBI in the top of the sixth, but the Chargers (3-5) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.

SVSU secured the win with two more runs in the seventh on an RBI single from Jessica Kreuzer and a one-run double from Gersch. The Cardinals with six hits and one error in the win.

Julia Mundy improved to 2-0 on the mound this season, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking one, and striking out one. Emily Depew earned her first save of the season with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Cardinals travel to Ohio Dominican University for a three-team, two-day round robin series, including West Liberty University March 5-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
