Cards run winning streak to seven after Friday sweep

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The SVSU Softball team upped its record to 14-2 overall on the season and ran its winning streak to seven games after claiming Friday victories over Missouri-St. Louis and Southern New Hampshire. The first one versus the Tritons went extra innings and the Cards won 4-3 in nine innings. The Cardinals then cruised to an 8-0 win over SNHU to finish the day.

Game #1 - Missouri-St. Louis

The Tritons got a run in the home half of the 4th inning on a home run, giving them a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals.

That lead held true until the top of the 7th inning. That's when the Cards were down to their last out and had Jessica Kreuzer on second base with Alyssa Muench at the plate. She delivered an RBI single and scored Kreuzer for the tying run at 1-1.

Each team scored a run in the 8th inning, with SVSU getting an RBI bunt single from Sara Moos to score Sabrina Sage. The game would then go to the 9th inning tied at 2-2.

The 9th inning began with Julia Salisbury ripping an RBI double to score Jackie Popko, giving the Cards a 3-2 edge. Sage would later get a sacrifice fly that allowed Salisbury to score for the 4-2 lead.

UMSL was able to get a run in the bottom of the 9th and the Cardinals left another runner stranded at second, putting the score at 4-3. That was the final of the game, with SVSU pulling out the victory.

Julia Mundy (4-2) picked up the complete game victory, working all 9.0 innings. She allowed seven hits and three runs (1 ER), walking three and registering three strikeouts.

Salisbury had four hits in as many at-bats with a double and RBI. Alex Roob added two hits as well while Muench and Moos each had a hit and RBI in the game.

Game #2 - Southern New Hampshire

SVSU wasted little time in the second game of the day, going for five runs in the bottom of the 1st for the 5-0 lead. Sarah Gersch led-off the game with a solo home run and then Shelby Misiak had an RBI single to score Moos. Blasia Moyler added the other three runs on a home run to center field.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Roob drove home Popko to push the lead to 6-0 before Gersch added another solo shot and Salisbury had an RBI infield single to plate Popko. Those put the score at 8-0, as that was the final.

Gersch had three hits with the two solo home runs. Popko had two hits and scored three times. Moyler had the three-run blast for the Cards as well.

Emily Depew (6-0) worked the first 4.0 innings, allowing zero runs on one hit. She struck-out three batters and walked three. Kasey Bagelmann tossed a scoreless 5th inning to keep the opponents scoreless.
