Misiak's three-run blast lifts Cardinals to nightcap victory over Davenport

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Softball team hosted Davenport University on Tuesday afternoon, playing the Panthers in a league twinbill. After falling by a narrow 5-4 score in the opener, Saginaw Valley cameback in game two and claimed a 5-3 victory after Shelby Misiak hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 6th. 

Game 1

Each team scored in the 1st inning to have the score knotted at 2-2. The Cardinals' runs came via an Aubree Mouthaan triple that scooted by the left fielder.

SVSU found themselved down 5-2 after five innings but made the game closer with another pair of runs in the 6th. Julia Salisbury had an RBI single and Alexis Cerven added a sacrifice fly, trimming the deficit to 5-4. 

That's where the final remained, however, as Davenport didn't allow a run in the final inning and won the game, 5-4.

Salisbury had two of the team's six hits with an RBI. Mouthaan had the triple and two RBI. Blasia Moyler, Sarah Gersch and Misiak all added a hit, with Moyler scoring twice as well. Cerven added the RBI on the sac fly.

Jaclyn Groves got the start and pitched the complete game, taking the loss. She allowed five runs on as many hits, posting one strikeout but walking eight batters. 

Game 2

The Cards manufactured a run right away in the home half of the first when Gersch led-off the game with a bunt single, stole second, was moved to third and scored on a groundout to give the home team a 1-0 edge.

Davenport scored once in the 3rd and twice in the 5th, taking a 3-1 lead over SVSU. 

The bottom of the 5th, however, saw Becky Corbett drill an RBI triple that made the score 3-2 after the home half of the 5th. 

With two outs in the bottom of the 6th and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Misiak stepped to the plate and delivered what would prove to be the game-winning hit. She drilled a line drive into the wind that would land over the center field fence, giving Saginaw Valley a 5-3 lead.

DU would go down in order in the top of the 7th, sealing the victory for the Cardinals. 

Six different SVSU players had a single hit in the game, with Misiak's three-run home run being the last. Corbett had the triple and RBI while Salisbury, Gersch, Mouthaan and Cerven added a hit as well. Jackie Popko added an RBI on a groundout fo the team's first run that scored Gersch. 

Julia Mundy picked up the win in relief, working 2.0 innings and allowing zero runs, no hits, a walk and struck-out one. Hannah Atwell got the start, tossing the first 5.0 innings. She allowed three runs on five hits, striking-out one and walking five batters.
