Cardinals split pair of one-run games at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio -- In another mid-week road GLIAC doubleheader, the SVSU Softball team traveled to play at Ashland University on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals dropped the opener 9-8 after an Ashland comeback before coming back themselves in the nightcap to claim an 8-7 victory. 

The split versus the Eagles makes it five straight for the Cards, who are now 15-15 overall and 7-9 in the GLIAC. Ashland is 24-14 overall and 10-8 in league play. 

Game 1

SV took a 3-0 lead after a run in the top of the 1st and two more in the 3rd, as the Cards got an RBI single from Aubree Mouthaan in the 1st and Sarah Gersch and Jackie Popko scored in the 3rd off of Eagle errors. 

AU scored five runs in the bottom of he 3rd and added one more in the 4th, taking the lead at 6-3. 

The Cards bounced back once again, scoring three runs in the 5th after a Blasia Moyler home run, Julia Salisbury RBI single and Becky Corbett RBI single. Two more came in the 6th when Shelby Misiak had a two-RBI double that pushed Mouthaan and Popko across. That made the score 8-6 in SVSU's favor. 

In the 7th, the Eagles were able to respond again and score three runs, with the final being unearned and claiming the 9-8 win.

Mouthaan had three hits with two runs, a walk and an RBI. Salisbury had two hits and an RBI. Popko had two hits and scored three runs. Moyler had her legue-leading 10th home run in the game. Misiak added two RBI on a double. Popko stole two bases while Sarah Gersch had another.

Mikayla Alexandrou (4-3) worked all 6.2 innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits with four walks and a strikeout. Only two of those nine runs were earned in the game. 

Game 2

Mouthaan got the visitors in the lead of the second contest, knocking in Gersch for the 1-0 edge. Two more came in the 3rd after Misiak had an RBI single and Sailsbury was walked with the bases loaded, making it 3-0. 

After the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the 3rd, SVSU went for three in the 4th to make the score 6-2. Popko had an RBI double and scored on an error while Misiak had an infield single for the Cardinals. 

AU scored five straight runs in the 4th through 6th innings, taking 7-6 lead over the Cardinals. 

In the 7th frame, Katy Ratajczak scored after an error and Gersch added an RBI single and scored Alexis Cerven. That gave the visitors the 8-7 win after SVSU held the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the 7th. 

Gertsh had a 3-4 game with a double, two runs and an RBI. Popko added two hits with a double and an RBI. Misiak had two hits, adding a pair of RBI. Misiak had two hits for the visitors as well with an RBI.

Jaclyn Groves got the win, working 1.2 innings while allowing just two hits and two runs, walking two and striking out one. Alexandrou worked the final inning, picking up her second save of the year.

The Cardinals travel to Wayne State on Thursday for another GLIAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. in Detroit.
