Softball posts Monday split at Lewis University

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Saginaw Valley State University Softball team played at Lewis University on Monday afternoon, facing the Flyers in regional action. The Cardinals took the opener by a score of 5-3 but dropped the nightcap by a 4-2 count.

Game 1

In the top of the 2nd, the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead after Alexis Cerven had an RBI bunt single to score Becky Corbett and Sarah Gersch added an RBI single that pushed Cerven across.

After the Flyers scored once in the home half of the inning, Saginaw Valley answered with one in the 4th inning to make the score 3-1. That run came after Cerven had another bunt single with an RBI that scored Corbett once again.

Lewis knotted the score at 3-3 in the 6th inning, sending the teams to the 7th inning deadlocked.

SVSU scored two runs in the top of the 7th, taking a 5-3 edge when Jackie Popko drove home Cerven and Savannah Oen for the lead.

Elayne Young got the start, working 4.0 innings in the circle while allowing just a single unearned run. She walked one and struck-out three batters. Hannah Atwell (3-2) got the win in relief, tossing the final 3.2 innings without allowing any hits or runs.

Cerven went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a couple runs scored. Gersch went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Popko had a hit and two RBI. Corbett scored twice and had a hit as well.

Game 2

SVSU got out to a quick 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the 1st. Megan VerVaecke had the RBI on a groundout, scoring Gersch for the game's first run.

Lewis tied the game with a run in the home half and added threemore in the 2nd, taking a 4-1 lead over the Cardinals.

The top of the 6th saw the Cardinals score one more run, trimming the deficit to 4-2. Julia Salisbury knocked-in VerVaecke for the second run.

That 4-2 score remained throughout the rest of the game, as the Flyers salvaged the split in the regional tilt.

Corbett had two of the team's four hits in the game. Salisbury had a double while Cerven added a hit as well. VerVaecke and Salisbury had the team's RBI.

Julia Mundy (4-5) took the loss in the game, starting and working 1.0 innings. She allowed two runs on three hits. Jaclyn Groves pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Cardinals.
