CALEDONIA -- The SVSU Softball team posted a nightcap victory over the Davenport Panthers on Saturday afternoon, claiming an 8-5 win after dropping the opener by a 3-0 count.
Davenport is now 15-14 overall and 7-5 in the GLIAC while the Cards stand at 12-12 overall and 5-7 in league play.
Game 1
DU scored two runs in the home half of the 1st inning, taking a 2-0 edge over the Cardinals with a pair of RBI via a walk and hit by pitch.
Another run came the Panthers' way in the 6th, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Davenport's Mallory Teunissen kept the Cards at bay in the game, posting 12 strikeouts and limiting the visitors to just five hits.
Meagan VerVaecke had two hits in the game for SVSU, while Shelby Misiak, Julia Salisbury and Becky Corbett added base hits as well.
Julia Mundy (4-4) took the loss after working just a third of an inning, allowing two runs and walking a pair. Mikayla Alexandrou pitched the final 5.2 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing one run. She walked one and had three strikeouts.
Game 2
Misiak put the Cardinals up 1-0 early in the second game, ripping a solo home run in the top of the 1st to give the visitors a lead.
The second inning was the big blow for the visitors, as SVSU scored seven runs to lead by an 8-0 score. Alexis Cerven had an RBI single, Corbett added a sac fly, VerVaecke drove home two with a single, and Misiak had an RBI single to get things rolling. Blasia Moyler was hit by a pitch to score another run and Salisbury drove-in a run on a fielder's choice.
The Panthers went for three runs in the bottom of the 5th on a two-run home run and a sac fly, trimming the deficit to 8-3.
No other runs came until the bottom of the 7th when Davenport scored two more to make the count 8-5 in SVSU's favor.
That score remained true with the Cardinals salvaging the league split.
Misiak had two hits with a home run and two RBI. VerVaecke had two hits with as many RBI as well. Cerven, Salisbury and Moyler all had a hit and RBI for the Cardinals to help lead the team to victory.
Hannah Atwell (2-1) picked up the victory in the circle after pitching 4.1 innings. She scattered eight hits and allowed three runs. Kasey Bagelmann got the save, working a third of an inning to close things out.
