Softball registers doubleheader sweep at Siena Heights

ADRIAN -- The Cardinal Softball team hit the road on Monday (Mar. 25) afternoon, taking on Siena Heights University in a non-conference doubleheader. The Cardinals picked up a sweep, holding on for a 7-6 win in the opener before posting a 12-7 comeback victory in the second contest.

The victories move SVSU to 8-8 overall on the season while the Saints fall to 15-5.

Game 1

Two runs came the Cardinals' way in the top of the 1st after Aubree Mouthaan had a bases-loaded walk and Julia Salisbury ripped an RBI single.

The Saints responded with a run in the bottom half and added another in the 3rd, making the score 2-2.

The top of the 4th frame had Saginaw Valley tack-on four runs to its total, breaking the tie and making the lead 6-2. Shelby Misiak delivered an RBI double, Mouthaan had a two-run home run and Blasia Molyer had an RBI single.

Salisbury added another RBI on a hit in the top of the 6th, moving the score to 7-2 in SVSU's favor.

The bottom of the 7th saw Siena Heights score four runs before SV was able to hold on and seal a narrow 7-6 win, as Julia Mundy came in and got the final out to record the save. Mikayla Alexandrou got the win in relief, pitching 4.2 innings while allowing five runs on six hits, walking two and striking-out one. Kasey Bagelmann got the start and pitched the first two innings, allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout.

Mouthaan had a home run with three RBI with a run scored and two walks. Moyler was 2-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI. Salisbury added two hits with a pair of RBI. Misiak and Alicia Kolacki each had a double, with Misiak adding an RBI. Becky Corbett had a triple for the Cards.

Game 2

Mouthaan began the game's scoring in the top of the 2nd inning when she belted a solo home run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Saints scored seven times in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch and pair of Cardinal errors in making the count 7-1 in their advantage.

Saginaw Valley would go on to score 11 unanswered runs the rest of the way, nailing down the 12-7 victory.

Three of those came in the top of the 3rd, when Mouthaan delivered another home run, this time a three-run shot for the third of the day and 30th of her SVSU career. That puts her alone atop of the all-time list, breaking the previous mark of 29 that was held by Courtney Reeves.

Katy Ratajczak added a two-RBI single in the 5th and the 6th saw an RBI single from Mouthaan and another from Jackie Popko

In the 7th, Misiak had an RBI, Kolacki had an RBI single and Moyler drilled a two-run long ball to reach the 12-7 lead.

Corbett added three hits of her own. Ratajczak had a hit and two RBI, Popko a hit and an RBI, Salisbury one hit and Misiak an RBI.
