Cardinals post Sunday split with Bulldogs

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Softball team claimed a game one victory on Sunday as part of a split with the Ferris State University Bulldogs at the SVSU Softball Complex. Saginaw Valley posted a 10-8 win in the opener and fell to the Bulldogs by a 10-3 count in game two. 

SVSU is now 6-8 overall on the season and 1-3 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs are 10-14 overall and 1-3 in league play as well. 

Game 1

Shelby Misiak responded for SVSU in the 3rd, belting a solo home run to knot the game at 1-1 to get things going for the home team.

After Ferris took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 2nd, the Cardinals went for three in the home half when they got an RBI double from Jackie Popko and a two-RBI single from Misiak. That made the score 4-3 in SV's favor.

The Bulldogs came back once again, scoring three more in the 5th and grabbing a 6-4 lead.

SVSU went-off for a five spot in the 5th, using an RBI single from Aubree Mouthaan, an RBI double from Julia Salisbury, a two-RBI double from Misiak and Salisbury scored on a fielding error. That put the lead in the Cardinals' favor once more with the score 9-6. 

Another RBI double from Salisbury in the 6th pushed that lead to 10-6. 

Ferris State scored two runs in the game's final play, which resulted in putout at second base but the Cardinals claimed the 10-8 win.

Misiak finished 3-4 with a double, home run and five RBI in game one. Salisbury was 3-4 as well with two doubles and a pair of RBI. Mouthaan had two hits with an RBI. Popko had the other run driven-in on a hit.

Julia Mundy (4-2) got the win in relief, working 3.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts. She allowed five runs on six hits. 

Game 2

The Bulldogs came right out of the gates in the second contest, going for seven runs in the top of the 1st to take an early 7-0 lead.

SVSU responded with two in the bottom of the inning when Meagan VerVaecke ripped an RBI double that pushed Mouthaan and Blasia Moyler across to make the score 7-2. 

Two more runs came Ferris's way in the 3rd and another in the 7th to give the visitors 10 runs. The only other SVSU run came in the bottom of the 5th when Popko had an RBI double that scored Mouthaan. The score of 10-3 would stand as the final.

VerVaecke had two hits with two RBI and Popko had the other RBI on a base hit. Mouthaan added two hits for the Cardinals as well. 

Mikayla Alexandrou (2-2) took the loss in the circle. She allowed five runs on three hits in a third of an inning's work. Mundy pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief for Saginaw Valley.
