7-1 victory over Bearcats highlights Sunday split for SVSU Softball

LEBANON, Ill. -- The Cardinal Softball team battled tough weather conditions on Sunday in another doubleheader at regional foe McKendree. After falling in the opener by a score of 9-1, SVSU responded with a solid second game and came away with a second straight split after a 7-1 victory. 

Saginaw Valley is now 2-2 overall on the season while McKendree sits at 5-7 for 2019. 

Game 1

The Cards managed just two hits in the first game on Sunday, coming off the bats of Alicia Kolacki and Blasia Moyler, who had the long RBI on a 3rd inning single that scored Kolacki. 

McKendree got up 7-0 after the first two innings and added single runs in the home half of the 4th and 5th innings, eventually closing-out for the 9-1 win in five innings.

The Bearcats' starter, Miranda Gajewski, kept the Cardinals in check all game with nine strikeouts and just two hits allowed. She got the win.

Elayne Young took the loss for SVSU, working one inning while giving up three runs on two hits with three walks and a strikeout. 

Game 2

Saginaw Valley came back nicely in the second game, putting up 12 hits while scoring most of its runs late in the 7-1 victory.

Kolacki had an RBI single to score Alexis Cerven in the 3rd to put the visitors on the board and the 4th inning saw Julia Salisbury triple to lead things off and then promptly score on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0.

A three-spot came SVSU's way in the 5th to push the lead out to 5-0. Salisbury came through once again, scoring Katy Ratajczak with an RBI double while Meagan VerVaecke drove-in Salisbury and Aubree Mouthaan with a single.

Mouthaan would plate two more runs in the top of the 6th to give Saginaw Valley a 7-0 edge. She tripled home Becky Corbett and Kolacki for the runs.

McKendree struck for a single run in the bottom of the inning but the Cardinals finished-off the 7-1 victory in the end.

Julia Mundy picked up the complete game victory in the circle, allowing just two hits with an unearned run. She had one strikeout and a single walk as well.

Salisbury was 3-4 with two triples, a double, an RBI and run scored. Kolacki was 3-4 as well with an RBI and run. VerVaecke had two hits in four at-bats, driving-in a pair. Mouthaan had two RBI with her triple as well. 

On the basepaths, Corbett and VerVaecke each stole two bases while Kolacki and Cerven added one stolen base. 

Up Next...

Saginaw Valley hits the road again to Peoria, Illinois for a weekend of games at the Peoria Slugger Dome. The indoor event will take place at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. The Cardinals will face Illinois-Springfield twice and also against Quincy and Lewis.
