Cardinals Drop Pair to #12 Lakers

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Softball team fell in a pair of league games on Wednesday (Apr. 11) to the No. 12 ranked Grand Valley State Lakers. The Cardinals dropped the opener by a 2-0 score before falling in the nightcap by a 5-0 count.

Game 1

The Lakers scored the game's only runs in the top of the 2nd inning on a double, taking a 2-0 lead.

SVSU had a solid scoring threat in the home half of the 5th inning when the Cardinals loaded the bases, but nothing would come of the opportunity.

Grand Valley sealed the victory by the 2-0 count.

Saginaw Valley totaled four hits in the defeat, with one-apiece coming from Danielle Hamilton, Courtney Reeves, Evy Lobdell and Maddy Burgess. Hamilton added a stolen base as well.

Anna Conard (9-4) took the loss despite a solid start in the circle. She scattered five hits, allowing the two runs with a strikeout but walked five in 6.0 innings.  Hannah Atwell worked a scoreless 7th for the home team.

Game 2

The first run of the second contest came when GV claimed a 1-0 lead on an RBI double. The Lakers tacked-on four runs in the top of the 4th, pushing their lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the 6th, SVSU had runners on second and third with one out for a good look offensively but GVSU was able to get out of the jam and keep the shutout in-tact.

The visitors would end up sealing their second shutout of the day in the nightcap as well, winning 5-0.

Hamilton and Becky Corbett each had a pair of hits in game two, with Corbett adding a walk. Meredith Rousse and Lobdell added the other SV hits, with Rousse also walking once.

Mikayla Alexandrou (5-6) had the defeat in the circle, allowing five runs on eight hits. She struck-out three batters in her 4.1 innings pitched. Atwell was solid in relief once again, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing no runs on just a single hit.
