ALLENDALE -- The SVSU Softball team traveled to play a league doubleheader at No. 18 Grand Valley State on Sunday (Mar. 25) afternoon. The Cardinals fell in the first game by an 8-2 score before falling in the final inning of the second game by a 2-1 count.

Game 1

The Cards got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning after Maddy Burgess reached base on a hit by pitch and she was brought home by a Meredith Rousse two-run home run.

The Lakers trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the home half of the inning after a lead-off home run and made the lead 3-1 after adding another pair in the 2nd inning.

Grand Valley would hold the Cardinals scoreless throughout the remainder of the contest, scoring three more in the 5th and two in he 6th to close-out for an 8-2 victory.

Rousse had the only extra-base hit with the long ball and the only two RBI. Burgess had a hit and run for the visitors while Julia Miller and Danielle Hamilton had the other two hits for the visitors.

Mikayla Alexandrou dropped to 7-5 overall on the season in the circle for the Cardinals.

Game 2

Saginaw Valley got on the board first in the second contest as well, taking a 1-0 edge in the top of the 1st when Lauren Bachert came around to score after a Laker error.

That lead held true all the way until the bottom of the 7th inning. There, GV tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI triple.

SV would get a double play a few batters later with the bases loaded, setting the stage for the finish of the contest.

After a steal and a walk, the Lakers would score the game-winning unearned run on an error, finishing the contest with a 2-1 final.

Hamilton went 2-2 in the nightcap while Bachert, Rousse and Courtney Reeves each had a hit as well. Rousse and Reeves had the only extra-base hits for the Cards with a double-apiece.

Anna Conard (8-3) dropped the decision pitching despite allowing just a single earned run and five hits. She walked four batters in her 6.2 innings of work.
