SVSU posts Saturday sweep over Ohio Valley

VIENNA, W.Va. -- The Saginaw Valley State University Softball team got back on the winning track on Saturday, recording a sweep at Ohio Valley University in regional action. The Cardinals posted an 8-4 win in the opener before claiming an 11-5 victory in the nightcap. 

Game 1 (W, 8-4)

Saginaw Valley scored a pair of runs in the top of the 1st and 2nd innings, respectively, and led 4-3 after two complete. Single runs came SV's way in the 5th and 6th innings as well and the score was at 6-4 heading into the 7th and final frame. Two more runs would follow in the last inning, putting the score at the 8-4 mark, which would prove to be the final. 

The Cardinals pounded-out 14 hits in the first game, with half of those being of the extra-base variety. Julia Miller was 4-4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI with two runs scored. Meredith Rousse had a home run and a double, going 2-4 with three RBI as well. Danielle Hamilton had a 3-4 game with a double, RBI, stolen base and run. Maddy Burgess was 2-4 with an RBI, two steals and run while Aubree Mouthaan was also 2-4 with a run scored. 

Mikayla Alexandrou (2-3) got the win in relief, working the final 5.0 innings. She allowed a single run on three hits, walking one and striking-out six. 

Game 2 (W, 11-5)

The offense would remain hot in the nightcap, as the Cardinals recorded a season-high 15 hits. Three more home runs would come SVSU's way in the second game, with Rousse and Miller each belting their second long ball of the day and Alicia Kolacki getting her first career home run for the Cardinals. 

After the game was tied at 5-5 through three complete innings, the Cards scored a single run in the 4th to take a 6-5 edge. The 7th inning was where the visitors put the game out of reach, hitting all three of the home runs while scoring five runs to put the lead at 11-5. 

Rousse was 3-4 with the home run, RBI, steal and run scored. Miller was 3-4 with a trio of RBI again, scoring two runs. Hamilton was 3-4 again, adding two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. Courtney Reeves and Evy Lobdell were each 2-4 with an RBI. Kolacki had the two-run home run for the Cards.

Anna Conard (5-2) picked up the victory in relief, working 3.0 no-hit innings while walking just one batter.

SVSU continues its road trip on Sunday, playing at Ohio Dominican University for another regional doubleheader. First pitch for game one is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
