No. 22 Cards sweep Cleary in non-conference action

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- In non-conference action on Wednesday (Apr. 26), the Cardinal softball team registered a sweep over Cleary University at the SVSU Softball Complex. SVSU posted a 6-2 victory in the opener before cruising to a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap in five innings.

Game One

Cleary grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st, but the Cardinals knotted the score at 1-1 in the home half after Meredith Rousse hit a solo home run to left center. 

SVSU added a run in the 3rd to make the score 3-1, after Evy Lobdell put a ball in play, allowing Danielle Hamilton to score from second base on an error by the second baseman.

Cleary tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the 4th, using an RBI single.

The Cardinals opened things up in the bottom of the 5th, getting four runs to push the lead to 6-2. A Rousse bases-loaded walk scored Hamilton for the first run. Aubree Mouthaan then hit a sacrifice fly that plated Madison Burgess. Anna Conard and Lauren Bachert followed with RBI singles, scoring Lobdell and Rousse, respectively.

That's where the score remained, with Saginaw Valley coming away with the game one victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Bachert was 2-3 with a double and RBI.
  • Lobdell added two runs with a run scored. 
  • Rousse had the home run, two RBI and scored a pair of runs. She added the team's only steal.
  • Conard had the RBI single while Mouthaan added an RBI.
  • Annie Hansen improved to 7-3 on the year, working 5.0 innings of relief. She scattered eight hits and allowed a single run with a walk and strikeout.

Game Two

Saginaw Valley struck for three runs in the 1st inning, using a Mouthaan sac fly and a two-run shot from Reeves, scoring Lobdell and Rousse as well for the 3-0 lead.

The 3rd inning featured five Cardinal runs, pushing the lead out to 8-0. Mouthaan had a two-run long ball that scored Rousse. Reeves followed to make it back-to-back, depositing another ball over the fence for the third run. Burgess then scored a pair with a single, allowing Becky Corbett and Breanna Dinsmoore to score.

SVSU added another two runs in the 4th inning, making the score 10-0. Kasey Bagelmann had her first two career RBI, ripping a single to center field that scored Reeves and Mouthaan. The home team shut down the Cougars in the top of the 5th, finishing-off the mercy rule victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Reeves finished the nightcap 2-2 with a pair of home runs, three runs and three RBI.
  • Rousse was 3-3 with two runs scored while Mouthaan had a home run with two runs and three RBI.
  • Bachert added two hits while Bagelmann had a hit and two RBI.
  • Lobdell and Corbett rounded-out the offense with a hit each. totaling 12 for the Cardinals.
  • Corbett had the team's only steal in the second game.
  • Emily Osteen picked-up her first career victory in the circle. She allowed seven hits in her 5.0 innings of shutout ball. She walked just one and posted six strikeouts.

The Cardinals, who are ranked third in the Midwest Regional rankings, will host Northwood University in another league doubleheader on Friday (Apr. 28). First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. at the SVSU Softball Complex.
