HILLSDALE, Mich. - The SVSU softball team hit the road this weekend for a pair of GLIAC doubleheaders, the first coming Saturday afternoon against Hillsdale College. The Cardinals dropped both ends of the day, losing by a 7-3 final in game one before falling by a 3-2 count in the nightcap.
The Chargers got out front in the opener in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 advantage.
SVSU knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the second inning when Bethaney Murphey belted a solo home run.
Two more Hillsdale runs in the home half of the fourth inning gave the Chargers a 3-1 advantage.
The Cardinals responded with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning. The runs came when Danielle Hamilton had a two-RBI single that pushed Madison Burgess and Breanna Dinsmoore across the plate to tie the game at 3-3.
Hillsdale would plate four runs in the bottom half of the sixth though, grabbing the lead back and making the score 7-3.
That's where the final score would stand for the opener, with the Chargers claiming the victory.
Burgess was 3-for-3 with a run and a walk for the Cardinals in game one. Hamilton had a pair of hits in four at-bats with two RBIs. Murphey had a hit, run and RBI as well with the home run.
Sarah Appold took the loss in the circle after working 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits. She walked three and struck-out six batters.
Hillsdale got out in front again in the second contest, scoring two runs in the second inning and another in the fourth for the 3-0 lead.
Murphey's second solo home run of the day came in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Charger lead to 3-1. Jessica Wood scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for the Cardinals as well but it was not enough and Hillsdale completed the sweep for the day with a 3-2 win.
Hamilton was 3-for-4 in the nightcap while Burgess, Murphey, Evy Lobdell and Mouthaan had the other hits for SV. Wood had a double and Murphey the home run for the team's extra-base hits. Murphey now has five long balls this season.
Sarah Vrabel got the start for the Cardinals and took the loss. She pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a walk.
Saginaw Valley (23-11, 9-7 GLIAC) continues on and plays at the University of Findlay Sunday in another league twinbill. First pitch is set for noon in Findlay, Ohio.
