KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team split day three of the 2012 Rebel Spring Games, falling to Southwest Minnesota State, 1-0, before defeating #12 C.W. Post, 1-0. The Cardinals are now 3-3 overall on the season.

Game 1
Junior Kailah Happ (Waterford, Mich. / Kettering HS) tried to get the offense going for the Cardinals with a leadoff double to right center in the bottom of the fourth inning. She would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lindsay Hayward (Ancaster, Ont.), before  the Mustang defense was able to get the remaining two outs.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Southwest Minnesota State was able to push a run across the plate. The lone run of the contest came in when Krista Steen laid down a suicide squeeze, allowing the runner on third to score.

Junior Jillian Williamson (Unionville/Sebewaing, Mich.) suffered her third loss of the season, despite pitching her second complete game with seven strikeouts. Junior Jenna Holmes (Jenison, Mich.) and freshman Jordan Randall (Clinton Twp, Mich.) both went one-for-two at the plate for the Cardinals.

Game 2
Neither team was able to genrate any offense through the first five innings. The Cardinals looked to get something going in the sixth inning when they had bases loaded and only one out, but would be unable to push any runs across the plate as the #12 Pioneers sat down the last two outs of the inning.

Saginaw Valley started another rally in the top of the seventh inning when junior Devon Eley (Centreville, Mich.) led off with a double to left center. Senior Natalie Wellman (Fairhaven, Mich./Anchor Bay HS) then laced a single past the shortstop that would score the Cardinal pinch runner, Randall. That would be the only run that junior Alexa Gehrls would need to pick up her third win of the season..

Gehrls pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, allowing only one hit. Wellman and Holmes both went one-for-two on the contest, while freshman Mackenzie Rousse (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) would pick up her first career hit in a Saginaw Valley uniform.

The Cardinals will be back in action Tuesday (Mar. 6) when they have a rematch with St. Cloud at 1:00 PM and take on Holy Family at 3:00 PM.
