Saginaw Valley Falls to Lake Superior, 2-0 and 4-2

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped two games today (Apr. 28) to Lake Superior State University, 2-0 and 4-2 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.

Game One
The Cardinals had a hard time stringing hits together in the first game.  Lake Superior was able to push two unearned runs across the plate in the top of the third inning, which ended all scoring in the game.

Senior Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lakes HS), junior Ashley Jordan (Freeland, Mich.) and senior Shannon McLaughlin (Benton Harbor, Mich. / KVCC) all had one hit for the Cardinals.

Freshman Alexa Gehrls (Caledonia, Mich.) got the start in game one, going all seven innings for Saginaw Valley.  She ended the day with seven strikeouts and only one walk and is now 1-3 on the season. 

Game Two
The Cardinals got on the board early in the game, scoring one run in the top of the first inning.  Senior Billi Hoeppner (Hemlock, Mich.) led off the game with a walk and stole second base.  Kaiser hit a fly ball to right field advancing Hoeppner to third base.  Jordan had her second hit of the day up the middle scoring Hoeppner.

Junior Kimberly Sills (Clinton, Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley HS) led off the top of the second inning with a line drive homerun to center field to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage over the Lakers.  Lake Superior battled back in the second inning scoring one run and in the fourth inning scoring three runs on three hits.

Senior Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Ind.) got the start in the circle with four strikeouts.  Bowlby is now 8-3 on the season for Saginaw Valley.

With the loss the Cardinals fall to 23-12 overall on the season, and 10-10 in the GLIAC, while Lake Superior improves to 10-34 overall on the season, and 5-17 in the GLIAC.  The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Lake Superior State.  The double header is scheduled to start at 3:00pm.
