Saginaw Valley Takes Game One from Hillsdale, 13-3 Game Two Postponed

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team took game one from Hillsdale College today (Apr. 3) 13-3, and game two is postponed until Monday (Apr. 5) at 4:00 pm.

Game One

The Cardinals came out swinging in the first inning when they scored seven runs on five hits.  Sophomore Lauren Memmer (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland HS) led off the inning with a base hit to the left side of the field, she then stole both second and third base.  Memmer came around to score after an error by the shortstop.  Jessica McKeith (River Rouge, Mich.) dug into the box with one out and bases loaded and hit a line shot double to the fence to clear the bases.  Sophomore Kalie Burdick (Milford, Mich.) ripped a double to right center scoring McKeith.  Both pinch runner Tory Watson (Talawanda, Ohio) and senior Shannon McLaughlin (Benton Harbor, Mich. / KVCC) scored on errors by Hillsdale. 

Senior Angela Kaiser hit her third homerun of the season in the bottom of the second inning to put Saginaw Valley up 8-0 on the Chargers.  Hillsdale scored one unearned run in the top of the third inning.   Sophomore Allison Jaskullka (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere HS) had a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third and came around to score after an error on Hillsdale.  Junior Jill Peterson came up to the plate and drove a single up the middle and Kaiser walked to load the bases once again for McKeith.  McKeith hit a grand slam into right field and had her seventh run batted in on the day.  The Chargers would try to come back when they scored two runs on a homerun in the top of the fifth inning. 

McKeith led the day for Saginaw Valley hitting two-for-two with seven runs batted in, while Memmer was two-for-two, and Kaiser scored three times.

Junior Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) got the start in the circle pitching 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and giving up only two hits.  Fulton’s record improves to 8-1.  Junior Amanda Astor (Dyer, Ind. / Marion Catholic HS) pitched 1.1 innings of relief for the Cardinals.

Game Two

Game Two is being postponed until Monday (Apr. 5) at 4:00 pm. 

With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 18-2 overall on the season, and 3-0 in the GLIAC, while Hillsdale falls to 6-13 overall on the season and 1-4 in the GLIAC.  The Cardinals will be back in action Monday (Apr.5) when they will finish the remainder of the second game at 4:00pm.
