KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team came away with three impressive wins on day two of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. They defeated Concordia St. Paul in the opener, followed that up with a win over Division I South Dakota and finished the Day off with a win over #15 California (Pa.).
Game One
The Cardinals did not waste much time getting the offense going in
the first of three games on day two of the Rebel Spring Games
putting a run on the board in the first inning against Concordia
St. Paul. Lauren
Memmer (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) would come around to
score the first run via an Ashley Jordan
(Freeland, Mich.) single and Golden Bear error to give the
Cardinals the early lead. Concordia would answer back in the bottom
of the first to knot the game at one.
Saginaw Valley would strike big in the third inning capitalizing
on two Golden Bear errors to take the lead 5-1. The big play was a
Jordan single up the middle that drove two runs home, she would
score later in to cap the Cardinal inning.
Jade Fulton
(Byron, Mich.) got the win for the Cardinals allowing one run on
three, while striking out nine as she notched her first win of the
season.
Game Two
Pitching and defense would be the story for the Cardinals against
Division I South Dakota. Kari Bowlby (Elkhart,
Ind./Central HS) got the start in the circle and went a complete
game seven innings allowing no runs on three hits and striking out
six.
SVSU would light the scoreboard for its lone run in the third inning when Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes HS) would score on a two out error by South Dakota.
Game Three
The Cardinals would battle #15 California (Pa.) in game three and
continue right where they left off at in the previous games, a
combination of strong defense, good pitching and capitalizing on
their opponents mistakes. Memmer would come around and score in a
crazy first inning that saw several illegal pitches and passed
balls to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
Cal would answer back in the top of the second to tie the score at
1-1 but SVSU would extend its lead for good in the third inning.
The key play came on an error of a Jordan hit ball that scored
Memmer, and then a hit by Jill Peterson
(Freeland, Mich.) brought home Billi Hoeppner
(Hemlock, Mich.).
The Cardinals would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth
to put the game out of reach. Two runs would come in on a Peterson
double to left center to extend the advantage to 6-2.
SVSU is now 4-1 on the season and will play two games on Sunday
(Mar. 7) at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
