Men Run Strong at Loyola Lakefront Invitational

Chicago, Ill.- The SVSU men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in tenth and 16th place in the 36th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Loyola University on Saturday.

The Cardinal men were led by sophomore Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East HS) who finished 23rd with an overall time of 25:36 in the 5K run, with the women getting a strong performance from junior Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich./Oscoda HS), who finished tied for 36th place with a time of 19 minutes. Overall, the men finished the meet in 10th place, with the women finishing in 16th.

On the men’s side, junior Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich.) finished in 50th place (26:11); junior Cortland Seaver followed just behind at 26:21 in 62nd place; sophomore Jesse Evans (Cheboygan, Mich.) finished at 26:59, freshman Nick Ekel (Elsie, Mich./Ovid-Else HS) clocked in at 27:18, while freshman Derek Welmers (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) timed in at 27:35, senior Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area HS) finished in 27:56 and freshman Patrick Klein (LeRoy, Mich./Pine River HS) rounded out the day in 28:51.

On the women’s side, paced by Stalker, junior Amber Catlin (Alma, Mich./Alma HS) clocked a total time of 19:47. SVSU finished with five runners crossing the finish line within 30 seconds of each other with freshman Chelsea Savage (Monroe. Mich.) behind in 20:10, and three seconds later, junior Libby Robinson (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS) clocked a time of 20:13, while junior Erin Dush (Sanford, Mich./Meridian HS) finished at 20:17, junior Rachel Trombley (Reese, Mich./Reese HS) came in at 20:25, and senior Elayna Dush (Sanford, Mich./Meridian HS)rounded out the SVSU runners at 20:35.

For the meet, the Cardinal men finished with a 320, good enough to crack the top 10, and the women had a 429 to finish the race in 16th place. Malone won the men’s race overall with a score of 44, while Northwestern finished first on the women’s side with a 76.
