Cardinal Men Compete in SVSU Holiday Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University men's track & field team competed in the SVSU-hosted Holiday Classic, held in the new Fieldhouse on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University.  In the first official event to be held in the facility, the Cardinals had some good showings at the meet.

In the field events, Devin Hartnagle got things going with a first place finish in the Weight Throw, recording a distance of 16.73 meters.  Hartnagle would add another top finish as well, finishing runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 14.53 meters.

Robert Tarpley had a great finish in the Triple Jump for the Cardinals, finishing second with a distance of 14.33 meters, provisionally qualifying him for the NCAA Division II Championships.  Teammate Frank Sanders was right behind in third place with a length of 14.03 meters.

Tarpley claimed victory in the Long Jump for SVSU, leaping to a distance of 6.89 meters.  Fellow Cardinals Sanders (6.78m) and Andrew Mudd (6.73m) finished in third and fourth, respectively, in the event.

Sanders would post another top mark in the meet, finishing runner-up in the High Jump.  He crossed the bar with an NCAA Provisional mark of 2.08 meters.  

In the One Mile Run, Travis Toye placed 2nd and Andrew Plude 3rd with times of 4:28.10 and 4:39.23.  The two only finished behind an unattached runner, former SVSU All-American Tony Filipek.

SV had a pair of top showings in the 60 Meter Dash as well, with Travon Phillips claiming the race with a time of 7.02 and Malik Washington finishing just a fraction of a second behind in 2nd place.

D'Omar Boyden finished in 1st place in the 60 Meter Hurdles, posting a time of 8.37 in the finals.

The men are off until January 16th when SVSU hosts the SVSU Classic, which will begin with a 2:30 pm start time in the SVSU Fieldhouse.
