HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's and men's indoor track & field teams finished competition on Sunday (Mar. 2) at the 2014 GLIAC Championships. After a slow first day where there were only 10 total events scored, the Cardinals had student-athletes post 11 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks on the final day of competition.
On the women's side, Emily Short had a couple of stellar performances for SVSU. The junior broke the SVSU indoor school record for the mile, running a provisional time of 4:56.57 and finishing 2nd in the event. Short added another provisional mark of 10:03.32 in the 3,000 meter run, finishing in 8th.
Sophomore Anna Fochesato also had an impressive showing on the final day. She broke her own school record in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 5'8.5" to finish runner-up. Fochesato added a 5th place finish in the triple jump with a number of 37'6.75". Both were provisional marks.
Junior Chantelle Fondren placed well alongside Short in the mile run, finishing in 5th with a provisional time of 5:01.81.
Senior Diamond Taylor improved on her preliminary time in the 400 meter dash by posting a provisional mark of 57.62 in the finals to finish 3rd.
Junior Emerald Joiner posted a 7th place showing in the shot put, hitting a provisional length of 46'10,25".
The women finished 7th overall as a team, accumulating 37 total team points.
D'Omar Boyden ran well in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles on the men's side, finishing with a provisional time of 8.18 to finish 6th.
Andrew Mudd finished 4th in the heptathlon with a provisional total of 4,762.
A duo of SVSU men rounded-out the provisional times for SV, as Andrew Middleton (6th) and DaJuawn Wallace (8th) posted times of 1:54.69 and 1:55.36, respectively in the 800 meter run.
The men would finish in 8th place overall in the championships with 29.50 total points.
The teams will await the release of the national performance lists, as the NCAA Division II Championships will be held March 14-15 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
