Wetters and Burelle Lead SVSU at The 'Cardinal'

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed today (1/27) in the 'Cardinal'.

Leading the men were distance runners Jon Wetters (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) and Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson HS) who both placed first in their respective events: Wetters in the 5,000-meter timing in at 15:33.16 and Burelle in the mile clocking in at 4:26.68.  Teammate Tony Peel (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek HS) would follow close behind Wetters in the 5,000-meter run coming in at 15:51.64, good for a third place finish.  Placing first and second in the long jump competition were Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) and Trevor Opalewski (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake HS) with leaps of 6.06 and 5.98meters, respectively.  Earning a third place finish in the 400-meter dash was sophomore Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich./Linden HS) who crossed the line at 52.41.  Rounding out the meet for the Cardinals was the 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Grob, Chiatalas, Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich./Artherton HS), and James Walker (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) who placed second overall coming in at 3:26.39.

The Lady Cardinals were led by senior Sarah Kawiecki (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) who placed second in the 400-meter run clocking in at 1:00.98.  Standing-out in the high jump for SVSU was freshman Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) who earned a first place finish clearing a height of 1.61meters.  Teammate Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) would time in at 9.37 for the 60-meter hurdles, good for a second place finish, while the 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Kawiecki, Kelsey Bartoloni (Southgate, Mich./Southgate HS), Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS), and Shaetelle Batten (Kearsley, Mich./Kearsley HS) placed third coming in at 4:25.37.

Saginaw Valley will be back in action again Friday (2/3) when they host Grand Valley State University for the SVSU vs. GVSU Dual.
