Bott Leads Cardinals at SVSU Indoor Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams held the SVSU Indoor Classic Friday (1/20).  The Cardinals competed well in their third meet of the season earning 19 total first place finishes on the day.

The men's team was led by senior thrower Brian Bott (Buckley, Mich./Kingsley HS) who placed first in the weight throw with a toss of 16.27 meters.  Teammates Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) and Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) earned first place finishes in the jumps, Grob in the pole vault (4.55 meters) and high jump (1.88 meters) and Sanders in the long jump (6.32 meters).  Placing first in the 60-meter hurdles with a final time of 9.25 was sophomore Deshawn Jones (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake HS).  Earning top-finishes for the Cardinals in the 5,000 and 3,000-meter runs were teammates Eric Spitz (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) and Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson HS), Spitz in the 5K coming in at 15:43.97 and Burelle in the 3K crossing the line at 8:54.11.  Clocking in at 4:34.08 for the mile was sophomore Chad Scott (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS), good for a first place finish.  Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich./Clio HS) would place first in the 400-meter run timing in at 52.47, while freshman teammate David Foster (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron HS) placed first in the 200-meter coming in at 23.05.  The Cardinals would end the meet on a high note with the 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Arnold, Grob, Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich./Artherton HS), and Lee Chiatalas (Fenton, Mich./Linden HS) placing first overall with a final time of 3:30.31.

The women's team was led by senior pole vaulter Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) who placed first in the vault clearing a height of 3.55 meters, which is only six inches lower than the school record.  Jumps teammate Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) placed first in the high jump competition clearing a bar of 1.58 meters while thrower JoAnne Carter (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich HS) would earn a first place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 13.76 meters.  Sophomores Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) and Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) would place first in their respective events, Roberson in the 200-meter run crossing the line at 27.26 and Taylor in the 400-meter coming in at 1:00.62.  Freshman Shae Batten (Kearsley, Mich./Kearsley HS) placed first in the 60-meter hurdles clocking in at 9.52.  The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Kelsey Bartoloni (Southgate, Mich./Southgate HS), Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS), Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS) and Taylor would end the meet with a first place finish for the Cardinals crossing the line at 4:18.25.

The Cardinals will be back in action again Friday (1/27) when they host 'The Cardinal.'
