Cardinals Suffer First Set Back in Over a Year with Season Opening Defeat at UIS

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team experienced its first defeat since 2021 with a 3-0 defeat on the road against Illinois-Springfield.

The Cardinals struggled to create opportunities as the UIS goalkeeper went unchallenged through the 90 minutes of play. The Prairie Stars held an 11-6 advantage in shots and scored on half of their shots on goal.

UIS took an early 1-0 lead with a goal scored in the opening 10 minutes of the game. The Prairie Stars would hold that lead through halftime. The lead would increase in the 66th minute before the final tally was registered in the 68th minute which gave the game its final result.

The SVSU men's soccer team will look to rebound with the second game of its road trip against Maryville on Saturday, September 2. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
