Cardinals hold off Timberwolves 2-1 on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team hosted rival Northwood University in the 2021 regular-season finale on Senior Day Thursday at the SVSU Soccer Practice Fields.

The Cardinals took an early lead and added a second goal in the first half to build a 2-0 advantage heading into the break. Northwood got on the board late, but SVSU held on for the win, snapping a streak of three-straight draws.

The victory pushes SVSU to 9-4-5 overall and 6-3-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as the Cardinals prepare for the 2021 GLIAC Postseason Tournament.

Prior to the game, SVSU honored five senior student-athletes, including Mason Maziasz, Gabriello Calamita, Robbie Bruce, Danny Barlow, and Alex Gloshen.

The Cardinals took the early lead over the Timberwolves, as Bruce buried a free kick in the fourth minute for his third of the season. The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 41st after a cross from Gloshen found Robbie Baker at the far post for a goal.

SVSU held a 2-0 advantage to the 74th minute when a defensive breakdown allowed Northwood a goal. The Cardinals kept the score 2-1 the rest of the way to secure the win.

SVSU outshot Northwood 20-12. Callum Harley made four saves in net for the Cardinals.

The GLIAC Tournament starts with SVSU as the No. 3 seed hosting No. 6 seed Northern Michigan University on Monday. The time and location of the game is to be determined.
