Men's Soccer wins second straight match with 1-0 victory over Northwood

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Hosting the Northwood University Timberwolves in a rivalry match at home, the SVSU Men's Soccer team had a hard-fought contest versus the Timberwolves on Friday (Oct. 11) afternoon. The Cardinals were able to sneak out on top with a 1-0 victory, using an early 1-0 lead to defeat the Timberwolves and seal the team's second straight shutout and fifth of the season.

It was early on when the Cards got the only goal of the match, as Robbie Bruce sent one towards the Northwood end. The ball was headed by a Timberwolf defender, redirected and found the back of the net for an own goal and a 1-0 SVSU lead at the 6' mark of the contest.

Both teams had five shots and two corner kicks in the first half in the closely-contested matchup.

The final 45 minutes of action saw Northwood post a 7-4 edge in shots, giving them a 12-9 edge overall in the match. The Timberwolves had five corners in the second half and the Cardinals had three.

Mason Maziasz (6-1-1) picked up the victory in net, recording three saves. He now has three shutouts on the 2019 campaign.

Bruce led the offensive attack for SVSU with three shots, putting one of those on goal. Gustavo Bergmann, Connor Rutz and Alex Gloshen all added one shot on goal as well.

From Head Coach Louis Barrow

"The lads started the game with fantastic energy. We pressed well and forced NU to make some mistakes. Credit to them, as they put a tremendous amount of pressure on us but we stood firm and won our battles. The new guys on our team understood the intensity of this rivalry and really showed the coaching staff just how much character and bravery we have. They have set the tone for work rate for the rest of the season."
