Rangers defeat Cardinals 2-0 in Friday league matchup

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Cardinal Men's Soccer team hit the road to face the GLIAC-leading Parkside Rangers on Friday (Oct. 4) afternoon in a matchup of two of the top three teams in the league standings. The Rangers scored a goal within the first 20 minutes and added another within the final 10 and were able to keep SVSU out of the net, securing a 2-0 shutout victory.

With the win, Parkside improves to 5-3-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the GLIAC while Saginaw Valley falls to 5-3-1 and 3-2-0 in league action.

The Rangers got on the board for the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute as Nikola Kesich scored an unassisted goal and put the home team ahead.

That same count held true all the way until the 84th minute, when Leki Prpa hit a shot that was deflected just enough, finding the back of the net and giving the Rangers an insurance goal with under seven minutes left to play.

The Cardinals had scoring chances from there, but Parkside's Juan Gonzalez was solid in net and made six saves on all six shots on goal that Saginaw Valley fired his way to seal the 2-0 win.

From Head Coach Louis Barrow

"Disappointing defeat in a game where we played very well today. The lads dominated possession for long spells of the game but unfortunately could not capitalize. We put some fantastic patterns together but conceded some soft goals from our point of view. The team showed brilliant grit and comaraderie to get better despite going goals behind, but it was not to be. We could not find a way to win despite playing well - but that's just football."
