HAYS, Kansas -- For the third time in program history, the No. 22 nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State University Men's Soccer team will compete in the NCAA Division II Round of 16. After claiming victories over Ashland and Southern Indiana this past week, the Cardinals will square-off against Ohio Valley University in the finale of the Midwest Regional bracket.
SVSU faces the Fighting Scots on Thursday (Nov. 15) in Hays, Kansas at 5:00 p.m. eastern time. The match will be played at Fort Hays State University at the FHSU Soccer Stadium. The winner of that match will face the winner of Fort Hays State vs. Northeastern State Saturday (Nov. 17) at 2:00 p.m. eastern time.
The Cardinals enter the match with an 11-2-6 overall record and are the No. 3 seed in the Midwest while Ohio Valley is 17-5-1 and the No. 4 seed. The Fighting Scots defeated Tiffin on Sunday, advancing on penalty kicks to secure the matchup with SVSU. The teams last met in 2017 with the Fighting Scots coming away with a narrow 1-0 victory at SVSU's Braddock Field on Sep. 10.
Saginaw Valley is competing in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the seventh time, all coming in the past eight seasons. The team competed in the NCAA Round of 16 in 2012 en route to an appearance in the NCAA Division II Championship Match and again in 2014 when they fell to Quincy in Oklahoma. In 2012, they defeated Rockhurst by a 2-1 count in Oklahoma.
