SVSU Men's Soccer Picked 2nd in 2018 GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll

GLIAC -- Coming off another trip to the NCAA Division II postseason appearance in 2017, the Saginaw Valley State University Men's Soccer team has been picked to finish second in the annual GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Cardinals received 33 points and three first-place votes, finishing just behind Davenport, which also had 33 points but four first-place nods. Northwood came in at third with 26 points. Purdue Northwest (16), Northern Michigan (15), Wisconsin-Parkside (13) and Ashland (11) rounded-out the remaining seven teams in the league.

2018 Saginaw Valley State Preview

Coming off its sixth NCAA Division II Playoff appearance in the past seven years, the Saginaw Valley State University Men's Soccer team is ready to continue that success and looks to advance further in the 2018 national tournament. The Cardinals return a plethora of talent to help accomplish that, welcoming back five All-GLIAC performers from last season this fall.

2017 GLIAC Freshman of the Year and All-GLIAC First Team forward Michael Hamilton returns for his sophomore campaign after finishing second on the squad with 15 points, notching six goals and three assists. All-GLIAC Second Team performers in junior Azaad Liadi and senior Michael Shaikly are back as well, looking to help carry the load on the offensive end. Shaikly had five goals and a pair of helpers in 2017 while Liadi added two goals and a pair of assists. Senior All-GLIAC First Team and All-Midwest Region performer Omar Sinclair will anchor the Cardinal defense once again and he will be joined by fellow senior Brian Sockow on the back row.

SVSU gets the 2018 campaign underway on the road, traveling to face defending national champion Charleston on Thursday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. The GLIAC schedule begins at home on September 14 against GLIAC newcomer Wisconsin-Parkside at 2:30 p.m.
