GLIAC Tournament Semifinals - SVSU is No.2 Seed, NMU is No. 6 Seed

MIDLAND -- Competing in the 2017 GLIAC Tournament Semifinals against the Northern Michigan University Wildcats, the Cardinal Men's Soccer team registered its eighth shutout of the season with a 1-0 win at Northwood University's Dean Field in Midland, Michigan.

After an opening half that went scoreless despite SVSU having eight shots and the Wildcats three, the Cardinal offense continued to press for scoring opportunities into the second half.

The No. 2 tournament seed finally broke through in the 69th minute when Chris Jacovou got past the defense and snuck a shot over the Northern Michigan goalkeeper. That shot bounced off the crossbar and was cleaned-up by Michael Hamilton, who got a foot on it and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

That was all the Cardinals would need, with the defense remaining stellar in allowing just eight total shots and one on goal.

Inside the Boxscore

  • SVSU posted a 17-8 overall edge in shots.
  • Corner kicks went the Cardinals' way as well, as the 11-3 advantage gave SV plenty of opportunities on the net.
  • Connor Keane (13-3-1), the 2017 GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year, stopped the only shot the Wildcats put on net in his seventh solo shutout of the season.
  • Jacovou's assist was his fourth of the 2017 season.
  • Hamilton, who was named the GLIAC's Freshman of the Year of Friday night, collected his sixth goal of the season after Friday's game-winner.

Saginaw Valley will square-off with Davenport University in Sunday's GLIAC Tournament Championship match. First kick is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Northwood's Dean Field. Saginaw Valley defeated the Panthers both times the teams played during the 2017 regular season. Due to Davenport University's current status as NCAA Division II provisional members, Saginaw Valley will receive the conference's automatic bid into this year's NCAA Tournament.
