MIDLAND, Mich. - Competing in the NCAA Division II tournament for the fourth time in the past five years, the SVSU men's soccer team opened play for the 2015 postseason on Thursday (Nov. 12) afternoon against the University of Indianapolis at Northwood's Dean Field. The matchup pitted the No. 3 regionally-ranked Cardinals against the No. 6 Greyhounds. Using a first half goal from Tyler Stephens and a second half score from Tyler Channell, SVSU closed-out for its fifth NCAA tourney victory by a 2-0 score.

Stephens put the first goal on the board for the Cardinals at the 25:37 marker of the contest. After Andrew Dalou put a shot on goal that was saved by Indy's Christoper Jones, Stephens stepped up and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Dalou was credited with the assist on the scoring play, which proved to be the game-winner.

Channell would add another goal after Troy Watson played a fine ball through the middle that Jordan Kalk let through under his legs, allowing Channell a great look on goal. He plugged it past Jones for the second goal of the contest, with Watson earning the assist.

The SVSU defense held solid throughout the contest, allowing just two shots on goal while preserving the team's sixth shutout of the season. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Saginaw Valley notched 16 shots in the match compared to 12 for the Greyhounds. Eleven of Indy's came in the second half, most which were from distance. The Cardinals put nine of those shots on goal compared to just a pair from Indy. 
  • Alexandre Bouillennec (15-2-1) made two saves while earning his fifth shutout of the 2015 season. He now has tied the career record of 12 shutouts, held by Jason Wise. 
  • Channell had match-highs of four shots and three shots on goal in the match. He now has 53 points on the season after the goal.
  • Stephens's game-winning score marked his first-career goal for the Cardinals.
  • Watson's helper was his fourth of the 2015 season and Dalou's assist gives him two on the year.
  • The 15 victories are the second-most in program history, three behind the 2012 mark of 18 wins. SVSU posted a record 14 regular season wins in 2015.

Up Next for the Cardinals...

Saginaw Valley faces No. 2 Midwest Regional seed Northwood University for the second consecutive year in the second round of the tournament. The Cardinals hope to repeat last year's 5-2 win at Northwood, which vaulted the team to its second NCAA Round of 16 in a three year span. The matchup is set for noon on Saturday (Nov. 14) at NU's Dean Field, which will mark the fourth time SVSU has played on the field this season. The teams have split the season series so far, with each team claiming regular season road victories.
