MIDLAND, Mich. - The #19 SVSU men's soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with the Lake Erie Storm on Friday (Nov. 6) morning in the opening game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Soccer Tournament, but the Storm would prevail and advance to Sunday's title game after out-scoring the Cardinals by a 3-2 count in the shootout.

After a scoreless first half, Saginaw Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when Troy Watson knocked in a head goal off a well-placed Aleksandar Isaevski pass.

Joseph Coombs tied it up for Lake Erie at the 74:14 mark, scoring off a free kick after a hand ball was called on SVSU at the top of the box.

The score remained tied at 1-1 for the rest of regulation and throughout both overtime periods, as neither team could capitalize on their opportunities.

The Storm grabbed a 1-0 edge after the first round of the shootout, as Coombs found the back of the net and Watson's shot missed for the Cardinals. SVSU evened it at 1-1, however, after the Storm's Anthony Novak couldn't connect and Isaevski put one past the goalkeeper for Saginaw Valley. Both Tyler Channell and Lake Erie's Stuart Campbell would connect on the next shots, knotting the count at 2-2. The Storm's Nolyn Do Nascimento would connect and give his team a 3-2 edge after SV's Omar Sinclair couldn't connect. Matt Wilson went next to begin the final round of the shootout and when his shot failed to find the back of the net, Lake Erie secured a spot in Sunday's championship match.

• Each team totaled 18 shots in the contest, with SVSU putting half of those on goal to just five for the Storm.
• Tyler Channell had a team-high of five shots, putting two on goal.
• Matt Wilson had a match-high three shots on goal, the first of which narrowly missed and hit the bottom of the crossbar.
• Alexandre Bouillennec (14-2-1) made four saves on the five shots he faced on goal during the match in his 110 minutes between the posts.

The Cardinals await the results of Monday night's NCAA Division II Tournament Selection show, which will show where the Cardinals will play next, as they have likely secured a berth in the national tournament. SVSU was ranked third in the most recent Midwest Regional rankings.
