UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The #11 SVSU men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 match at home to the #17 Northwood University Timberwolves on Friday (Oct. 30) afternoon in a battle for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season championship.

Northwood got on the board at the 32:05 marker of the first half on a free kick from the top of the box by Jack Smith that just tucked in the top left corner of the goal for the 1-0 visitors lead.

That score held true into the halftime break, as Northwood out-shot SVSU by a narrow 4-3 margin in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Each team posted seven shots in the second half but there would be no additional scoring and Northwood would seal the one goal victory and the regular season title.

Inside the Boxscore

  • The Timberwolves had a narrow 11-10 shot edge in the match.
  • Each team put three shots on goal in the contest.
  • Jordan Kalk and Tyler Channell had team-highs of three shots, each putting one shot on goal.
  • Alexandre Bouillennec (14-2-0) made two saves on the three shots he faced on goal and suffered just his second loss in net for the 2015 season.

From Head Coach Andy Wagstaff

"Today we did not play our usual game which makes the loss more difficult to take. I firmly believe that we wanted it so much that we played in a way where we were fearful of losing. It's a shame because we have a fantastic team and a great bunch of young men who are usually very good at dealing with adversity. Sometimes in sport, you simply have those bad days and today was one of them. I am very confident that the team will bounce back and be ready for our next challenge, which is the league tournament. It's knockout soccer now and I feel like we have a bunch of young men capable of making some amazing things happen. This story has a few more chapters yet. Congratulations to Northwood, as they have had a great season."

Up Next for the Cardinals...

Saginaw Valley will head into the 2015 GLIAC Tournament as the #2 seed and face the #3 seeded Lake Erie Storm. The semifinal round match will be at Northwood University on Friday (Nov. 6) at 10:00 a.m. The two teams have split the season series, with each school posting a 3-2 home victory in the season series. The winner will advance to Sunday's championship match against the winner of #1 Northwood and #4 Tiffin.
