UNIVERSITY CENTER - Coming off a stellar 5-1 victory over the University of Findlay on Friday afternoon, the 23rd-ranked Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team kept the fine play rolling with a key 4-1 victory over Tiffin University in a GLIAC matchup at SVSU's Braddock Field.
Senior forward Tyler Channell had a hat trick in the game, his second one in a week's span, as he had one the past Sunday in the team's 9-1 victory over Walsh.
Channell's first of three consecutive scores came just 4:13 into the contest when he knocked the ball into the back of the net off a feed from Aleksandar Isaevski to make the score 1-0.
He would strike for his second goal at the 9:29 marker when he stole the ball from a Dragon defender and beat the goalkeeper once more to push the lead to 2-0.
Channell's third goal of the true hat trick came off a Matt Wilson pass at the 28:20 mark of the first half, which he cashed-in on to make the score 3-0 with his eighth goal of the season. Channell now has surpasses the school record for points, as he has 80 in his fourth season and broke the previous mark of 75.
Olutawobi Oyeleye got in on the action for SVSU, increasing the team's lead to 4-0 when Vaughn Frederick connected with him at the 41:46 time marker for the goal.
Tiffin answered quickly with a goal just under a minute later to make the score 4-1, which is what it would remain heading into the halftime break.
Neither team would score in the final 45 minutes of play in the second half, sealing the three-goal victory for the home team.
Alexandre Bouillennec got the victory for SVSU between the posts, improving his record to an unblemished mark of 7-0-0 on the 2015 season after making five saves in the win.
The win over the Dragons marks the fourth straight for SVSU, improving its record to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the GLIAC. Tiffin falls to 4-3-2 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.
Saginaw Valley remains atop the GLIAC standings and hits the road for a four game stretch in Ohio the next two weekends. The first of those will see the Cardinals visiting Lake Erie College Friday (Oct. 2) in a 7:00 p.m. matchup before they play at Ohio Dominican Sunday (Oct. 4) at 2:00 p.m.
