Men's Soccer Team Falls In GLIAC Title Match

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team fell in the opening seconds of double overtime in the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship match to Ohio Dominican University by a score of 2-1.

The match was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation and through the first overtime period.  The Panther's Frazer Fernandes scored just 11 seconds into the second overtime session to end the contest and clinch the title with the 2-1 victory.

Dominican got the scoring started earlier in the match with a Jakob Szabo goal off a feed from Fernandes to make the score 1-0 16:35 into the contest.

SVSU's Jordan Kalk, the 2013 GLIAC "Freshman of the Year," evened the score at 1-1 when he scored his 10th goal of the season off a shot rebound from senior Zach Walega.

That score would hold true all the way up until Fernandes's game-winning goal in the second overtime.

Saginaw Valley led in the shots category for the first half by an 11-10 margin.  The Cardinals, however, didn't get a single shot off for the remainder of the contest and Ohio Dominican finished with a 16-11 upper-hand in the shots category.

The Cardinals' season ends with an 11-4-5 overall record after the loss.  The Panthers improve to 12-2-4 with the win and will likely advance to compete in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

SVSU graduates eight players from this year's team, the winningest senior class in program history.
