Savage's OT Goal Advances Cardinals To GLIAC Championship Match

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team got an overtime goal from senior midfielder Lachlan Savage 9:26 in the first overtime to keep the Cardinals alive for a second-consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship with a 1-0 victory over the Tiffin University Dragons.

The first half saw Tiffin post a 5-2 advantage in total shots, with none of the shots for either team being put on net.

The 0-0 deadlock would continue throughout halftime and the second half as well, as the Dragons held an 11-3 edge in shots over the second 45 minutes of play.

Saginaw Valley sophomore goal keeper Joshua Howell, however, stopped all three that were on goal.

The Cardinals got the game-winner with just over 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, as freshman forward Jordan Kalk found Savage, who snuck the ball over the goalie's head and into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season and the 1-0 victory.  It was Kalk's first assist of the 2013 campaign.

SVSU out-shot Tiffin 3-2 in the overtime period, the third being the game-winner.

It was Howell's second-straight win in goal for Saginaw Valley and first-career shutout, as his record is now 2-0-0 on the year.

With the victory, the Cardinals (11-3-5) advance to the 2013 GLIAC Tournament Championship match, where they will square-off against the winner of the Ohio Dominican/Lake Erie contest, which is being played at 7 pm Friday night (Nov. 8).  The championship tilt is set to begin at 1 pm at Panther Field on the host campus of Ohio Dominican University.
