SVSU Defeats Northwood 1-0 In Overtime Thriller

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated rival Northwood University, 1-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest that ended in overtime on Wednesday afternoon. (Oct. 30)

The first half stat line showed very similar play from both teams.  Saginaw Valley held the advantage in shots, 5-3, and edged Northwood in corner kicks by a 4-2 mark in the half.  There were no quality goal scoring chances after the first 45 minutes.  The squads would enter halftime with the score knotted at 0-0.

The second half saw a few  scoring opportunities.  The best chance was taken by the Cardinals when Vaughn Frederick lasered a shot that sailed just over the crossbar in the 82nd minute.

SVSU out-shot Northwood by an overwhelming 14-3 margin and also conquered the corner kick category by earning seven corners compared to NU's two in the second half.

Regulation would end with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

It was at the 95:13 mark when Tyler Channell drove a ball toward goal, where it deflected off of a Timberwolf defender and into the back of the net for the 1-0 win.

Freshman goal keeper Aaron Gerwig was solid all day in net for Saginaw Valley, posting his fifth shutout and eighth combined shutout of 2013.

The Cardinals improve to 9-3-4 overall and 8-2-3 in the GLIAC after the victory while Northwood falls to 5-8-1 and 5-7-1 in the conference.

Saginaw Valley is back in action on Friday (Nov. 1), when it hosts Tiffin University in another GLIAC contest.  This game will also serve as the men's Senior Day, where the team will honor this year's senior class.  Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm at Braddock Field.
