Cards Take Early Lead, Finish With Tie At Ohio Dominican

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team squared-off with the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Sunday (Oct. 27) in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

After grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first half, the Cardinals surrendered a pair of second half goals and the game ended in a 2-2 tie after two overtimes.

SVSU took a 1-0 lead after a goal on a header by junior defenseman Michael Lamb at the 29:22 mark in the first half.  It was Lamb's fourth goal of the season.  Craig Neal was credited with the assist after putting it in the box off a corner kick.

Lachlan Savage tacked-on another goal for the Cardinals, as the senior mid-fielder found the back of the net with his fifth goal of the season at the 31:35 marker to give the team a 2-0 lead.  The goal came off another Neal corner kick.  The two assists gives Neal nine for the 2013 season, which is tops in the GLIAC by four.

Saginaw Valley would retain the two goal lead into halftime and until the Panthers scored their first goal at the 71:05 mark in the second half, cutting the lead in half at 2-1.

ODU tied the match at 2-2 after another goal at the 80:18 marker.

Neither team could capitalize on any opportunities in the overtime periods.  SVSU had two shots in the first overtime and three in the second.  The Panthers only managed a single shot in the second overtime period.

The Cardinals posted a 23-16 advantage overall in shots for the contest and a 13-7 edge in corner kicks.

After the tie, Saginaw Valley now sits at 8-3-4 overall and 7-2-3 in the GLIAC.  The Panthers are now 9-2-3 overall and 8-2-2 in league play.  SVSU sits two points behind both Dominican and Tiffin for the top spot in the league standings.

Saginaw Valley returns home on Wednesday (Oct. 30) to face rival Northwood University in another GLIAC tilt.  The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start time.
