Men's Soccer Ties At Tiffin, 1-1

Men's Soccer Ties At Tiffin, 1-1

TIFFIN, Ohio - In a matchup between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Standings, the Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team tied with the Tiffin University Dragons today (Oct. 4), 1-1.

The match was suspended due to lightning and per NCAA rules on a game that makes it past the 70-minute mark, the game was official.

The Dragons got on the board first, as Edison Benda found the back of the net 8:45 into the match to grab a 1-0 lead for Tiffin.

Saginaw Valley responded five minutes later, as freshman Jordan Kalk (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary) notched his GLIAC-leading sixth goal to knot the score at 1 goal-apiece.  He used a feed from junior Craig Neal (Bay City, Mich./Western) to score.  Neal currently sits atop the GLIAC with seven assists in 2013.

The game would remain a tie until the 81:55 mark, when play was suspended due to lightning in the area.  It would end up being an official contest with a 1-1 tie result per an NCAA rule that makes the game official after 70 minutes of play.

"Today was a tough game, but one with a decent result at Tiffin," said SVSU Head Coach Cale Wassermann.  "It will be nice to give the team the weekend off now to recover and rest a little bit before our next round of games at Malone and Walsh."

The Cardinals' record now stands at 6-2-2 overall on the season and 5-1-1 in the GLIAC while Tiffin is now 6-1-1 and 4-1-1 in league play.

SVSU is off until Oct. 11, when it begins a weekend trip to Ohio to face Malone and Walsh (Oct. 13) in a pair of contests that begin at 3:30 pm.
