TOWSON, Md. – Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer forward Zach Myers (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Myers, the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Year, has led the No. 12 Cardinals (17-2-4) to a 13-game unbeaten streak and to the NCAA Division II semifinals this weekend (Nov. 29). A management major with a 3.65 G.P.A., the Grand Rapids, Mich. native has scored 16 goals with two assists this season. He scored the game-winning overtime goal for Saginaw Valley in the Cardinals' win over Northeastern State to send them to the national semifinals. A two-time Daktronics all-region performer, he was also named as the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. Myers becomes the first SVSU men's soccer player to be selected to the Academic All-America® Team by CoSIDA.
Seven members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA II men's soccer first team have at least a 3.90 G.P.A. while two of them have a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11 first team honorees have an average G.P.A. of 3.86.
SVSU will make their first appearance in the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Final Four when they play No. 2 Simon Fraser on Thursday (Nov. 29) at 2:00 PM in the semifinals for the chance to advance to the National Championship game on December 1.
The NCAA Championships will be played in Evans, Ga. on Nov. 29 and Dec. 1.
