No. 24 Cardinals Extend Unbeaten Streak to Eight; Shutout Urbana 3-0

URBANA, Ohio - The No. 24 ranked Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Urbana University 3-0 today (Oct. 28) in their non-conference regular season finale. SVSU finishes with a 13-2-3 record as they head into postseason competition.

The Cardinal offense wasted no time getting started as Robert Short (Goodrich, Mich.) put SVSU on the scoreboard just 45 seconds into the match with an unassisted goal to beat the Blue Knights keeper.

Saginaw Valley extended their lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute of the first half with another goal by Robert Short as he headed in a corner kick off the foot of Ben Thomas (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern HS). Short's two scores were his second and third tallies of the season.

The Cardinals continued their dominance 13 minutes later when Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Salem) found the back of the net on a breakaway for his ninth goal of the year after a crossing pass to the backside from Ben Thomas.

The SVSU defense maintained high pressure throughout the remainder of the contest as goalkeepers Jason Wise (Troy, Mich.) and Tyler Yachcik (Grand Blanc, Mich.) combined for the 3-0 shutout victory in net.

The shutout is the fifth straight for the Cardinals as they have allowed just one goal in the month of October extending their unbeaten streak to eight matches.

The SVSU men's soccer program clinched their second consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship as they finish with the best record in the conference at 13-2-3.

The Cardinals will host as the No. 1 seed of the 2012 GLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament next weekend starting on Friday (Nov. 2) and finishing up on Sunday (Nov. 4).
