Cardinals Defeat Timberwolves in Thrilling 2 OT Contest, 1-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team won a thrilling double-overtime Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest today (Oct. 19) against the Timberwolves of Northwood University, 1-0, on goal in the final seconds of play.

The Cardinals and Timberwolves would play blemish free soccer for nearly 110 minutes before Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Salem) found the back of the net off of a diving header on a pass from Robert Short (Goodrich, Mich. / Goodrich HS) with just 31 seconds left to play to give SVSU the win in dramatic fashion.

Savage's goal pushes his point total to 16 on the year, which is fifth best in the conference. The assist by Short brings his total to seven and tied for the GLIAC lead.

The victory helped pad the Cardinals point lead over Northwood in the GLIAC North standings.  The win also gave SVSU a two-point lead in the overall GLIAC standings over Notre Dame (OH) and Ohio Dominican for the right to host the GLIAC Men's Soccer Championships in November.

Goalie Jason Wise (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) earned his tenth win of the season as he stopped all three shots he faced on the afternoon. Wise continues to lead the GLIAC with a 1.00 goals against average.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 21) when they host Tiffin University for Senior Day at 2:30 PM at the SVSU Soccer Complex.
