Saginaw Valley & Malone Battle To Scoreless Draw

CANTON, Ohio - The No. 21 Saginaw Valley State Unviersity men's soccer team battled the Malone Pioneers to a scoreless draw today (Oct. 7) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.

SVSU outshot the Poineers 29-10 on the afternoon, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.  Jason Wise (Troy, Mich.), who played all 110 minutes, stopped all five shots he faced in the contest for his fifth shutout of the season.  The Cardinals also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Neither team would be able to notch a goal to give their team the advantage, forcing the contest into a set of overtime periods.  Both defensive units would be up to the challenge as the game ended 0-0 after the two extra sessions.

"I was extremely proud that we went on the road and played 200 minutes of shutout soccer." commented head coach Cale Wassermann.  "We created 29 shots today in some tough conditions dealing with rain on a soft muddy field. It was a shame that we weren't sharp enough to finish a few of our chances and the Malone goalie had an unbelievable save to stop a shot that would have won it for us. We learned a lot this weekend and look to improving this week for our upcoming challenges."

With the tie the Cardinals move to 8-2-2 overall on the season and 5-2-2 in the GLIAC, while Malone is now moves to 4-5-1 overall on the season and 4-3-1 in conference.
