No. 8 Cardinals Rally to Defeat Mustangs, 4-3

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Marygrove College 4-3 today (Sept. 7) as the Cardinals move to 3-0 and are ranked at No. 8 in the NSCAA national rankings.

The Cardinals claimed the first goal of the evening when junior Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Salem) put the ball in the back of the net off an assist from Robert Short (Goodrich, Mich. / Goodrich HS) at the 38:31 minute mark of the first half. Saginaw Valley would go into the intermission leading by a 1-0 score.

The Mustangs entered the second half of play on fire scoring three quick goals to make the score 3-1. The Cardinals would soon answer back at the 69:17 mark as Short cashed in on a scoring opportunity to cut the deficit to just one (3-2).

SVSU used that momentum swing to their advantage as Conor Reaume (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) came along with an equalizer to knot the contest at 3-3 at the 71:58 mark.

Soon after, Savage again found the sweet spot on a laser just inside the right post for his second goal of the evening at the 82:24 minute mark to give SVSU the 4-3 edge.

Marygrove managed a couple scoring opportunities late, but the Saginaw Valley defense stood strong to capture the 4-3 comeback victory.

Jason Wise (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS), the SVSU senior goalkeeper, earned his third win of the season with three saves against the Mustangs.

The Cardinals will return to action this Sunday (Sept. 9) when they visit crosstown rival Northwood at 4:00 PM.
