No. 22 Cardinals Beat Lewis 3-1 in Season Opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The No. 22 ranked Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team kicked off the season in grand fashion with a 3-1 victory over Lewis University in front of their home fans today (Aug. 30) at the SVSU Soccer Complex.

The Cardinals (1-0-0) scored the first goal of the game when Zach Myers (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern HS) found the back of the net on the first of his two goals on the afternoon at the 9:15 mark of the first half on an assist by Zach Vasold (Freeland, Mich. / Freeland HS).  He would add his second goal of the afternoon in 77th minute on an assist from Ben Thomas (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern HS).

Conor Reaume (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) would find the back of the net for his first goal of the season off of a Morley Burns (Rochester, Mich. / Adams HS) corner kick that would give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage midway through the first half.  Lewis (0-1-0) would answer back in the 31st minute with its lone goal of the afternoon by Guy Ngbwa-Ngbwa.

Senior goalkeeper Jason Wise (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) allowed just one goal as he recorded his first win of the season.

"Today was a great team effort from everyone, front to back the work rate was there... when we have that mentality we can do some very positive things. We minimized chances and created a lot for ourselves with smart decisions. We have a lot of things to work on and much improvement is needed, but it is a great way to start the season at home and we are proud of the effort. We are looking to recover well and sharpen up for Sunday's contest against a tough St. Joe team," commented head coach Cale Wassermann.

The Cardinals will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 2) when they play host to St. Joesph's University at noon in the SVSU Soccer Complex.
