Saginaw Valley Defeats Lake Erie, 5-1

Painesville, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Lake Erie College, 5-1 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.

The Cardinals would take the early lead over the Storm just under 10 minutes into the game when sophomore Zach Walega (Saline, Mich.) scored from 15 yards out on an unassisted goal. Saginaw Valley took a 2-0 advantage when Tyler Channell (Troy, Mich.) scored on passes from Walega and Zach Myers (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS). Sophomore Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Salem HS) would give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead going into halftime when he scored off a free kick from 30 yards out.

Saginaw Valley extended their lead to four when Conor Reaume (Troy, Mich.) scored an unassisted goal on a one-on-one at the 60:35 mark of the contest. Lake Erie would try to come back on the Cardinals when they scored their only goal of the game just two minutes later making the score 4-1. Savage scored his second goal of the contest when he got a pass behind the defense from Channell and allowed Saginaw Valley to go on to a 5-1 victory.

The goaltending tandum of Jason Wise (Troy, Mich.) and Tyler Yachcik (Grand Blanc, Mich.) combined for the win against the Storm. Wise saved three of the four shots he faced on goal.

With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 9-2-2 overall on the season, and 5-2-1 in the GLIAC, while Lake Erie falls to 5-6-2 overall on the season, and 3-3-2 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 16) when they travel to Ashland. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
